What Moves You?

I am what people term as a softie. I tend to feel certain things very strongly. I can cry at the drop of a hat just by the feelings that a random event evokes in me. A description of an event or a photo that for some reason just speaks to me. A song on the radio that hits a certain chord when I hear it.

When I was 17 I went with my mother and her soon to be husband to BYU Education Week. I didn't really want to go but they asked me to go as a chaperone. My mother is very strong in her belief that you should wait until marriage and didn't want there to be too much temptation.

While I was there I attended a seminar. To be honest I can't remember what the talk was about. The thing that I do remember was when the speaker's daughter sang a song called "His Hands" while photos flashed on an overhead screen.

Some of the lyrics to the song are:

His Hands tools of creation
Stronger than nations
Power without end
And yet through them
We find our truest Friend

His Hands
Sermons of kindness
Healing men's blindness
Halting years of pain
Children waiting
To be held again

His Hand would serve His whole life though
Showing man what hands might do
Giving, ever giving endlessly
Each day was filled with selflessness
And I'll not rest
Til I make my hands what they could be
I will make my hands like those from Galilee

His Hands warming a beggar
Lifting a leper
Calling back the dead
Breaking bread
Five thousand fed

His hands
Hushing contention
Pointing to Heaven
Ever free of sin
Then bidding man to follow Him

They take His hands
His mighty hands
Those gentle hands
And then they pierce them
They pierce them
He lets them because of love

From birth to death
Was selflessness
And clearly now
I see Him with His hands
Calling to me

And though I'm not yet
As I should be
I know now
How I could be
I will make my hands
Like those from Galilee

The very last photo of the slide show make me break down in tears. It was a photo that I had never seen before and spent over the next 10 years looking for. The look on Christ's face and he is welcoming someone home is full of love but tinged with a desperation that to me is reminescent of a parent welcoming home a wayward child.

I don't really know why the death of an aquaintance doesn't make me cry but a photo and a song brings tears to my eyes on a regular basis.

What moves you? What brings tears to your eyes?

I remember going to Christmas service with my mom several years back, and a pastor sang "Oh Holy Night". He had the most beautiful, baritone voice I had ever heard, and his voice was so powerful, and that is my favorite Christmas song, that it gave me chills and brought tears to my eyes.

So certain songs move me, also images (that one you chose hit me), poems ("Footprints in the Sand", "Annabelle Lee", etc.), inspirational stories my friends email me...All sorts of stuff.

i do the "man cry" thing at movies a lot... you know what i mean, fingers at the bridge of the nose trying not to cry... i'll say "i've got something in my eye" before i'll finally admit i was crying. men: we are such pansys about out emotions.

I cry at movies easily and I cry at the silliest things sometimes, especially when I feel overwhelmed by something...I cried once when I said goodbye to my parents in Rome to go back to London. My dad was very ill and I knew I might not had seen him again. But I could only cry after they left. That's me, I can't cry in front of others, I feel too embarassed to show them anything and sadly that includes my parents. I loved your post, it makes you explore your feelings.

I am such a baby- I cry all the time. It's so embarrasing when I'm crying because of something, and look around and I'm the only one crying.

Lately, it's been that Blue October song "Hate Me" b/c it makes me think of my ex. Funny you posted this...I posted that song on my blog today.

ooohh...and the movie "Love Actually" makes me cry every single time I see it.

MJB ~ I have witnessed your "Man Cry". You do it very well. I actually don't mind people seeing me cry except that my face gets all blotchy.

Erica ~ As long as you are able to cry that is what matters. Just make sure they know how much you love them.

Ash ~ I will be telling my friend a story about something that I heard and I will get choked up. It could be something sad or inspiring and I start to get all blubbery about it.
Love, Actually is one of my top 5 favorite movies.

In the cinema my eyes water at anything remotely sentimental. Ahem, of course that's not crying though. I do cry at X Factor - when someone who has been downtrodden all their lives suddenly sings like an angel and all the years of hurt are swept away. Gets me, everytime.
When England play football, I cry if they win and cry if they lose. Especially on penalties.

I cry easily. My sentimentality buttons are easily pushed. There is usually something in Grey's Anatomy that makes me cry, too. Photo montages in shows with Sleepwalk played over them kill me.

Nostalgic things move me, and sometimes movies. I cry more out of frustration or relief than I actually do from being "moved".

A radio station played a compilation of songs during the aftermath of 9/11, and ever since then I get choked up over two songs: "I'm Already There" by Lonestar and "Only Time" by Enya. Never fails.

Thomas ~ I cried when Izzy's fiancee died. Tres sad.

Furtive ~ Sounds like you are a guy who is in touch with his emotions.

l.b. ~ Photo montages were invented by Kleenex. I swear it!!

FG ~ You have some serious crocodile tears. Remember when you cried and got me drenched? No, not that time, the other time.. Yeah, that was good times.

Tara ~ Songs about being far from home or missing someone get me choked up.

what movies me is small acts of kindness that mean a lot. anyone can give me an expensive gift but sentimental ones show someone really cares.

dogs make me teary

i cry in movies when the animal dies but not the human

old old couples i see that still hold hands or kiss each other

epic movies - i love the hero story

i cry all the time LOL

Rach...I think crocodile tears mean fake tears. Are you saying I'm fake? Or are you saying my tears are fat? lol

Rachel said...

Rach ~ I get choked up all the time for any kind of inspirational story.
I LOVE to see elderly people holding hands. Makes me believe that there is someone out there for me too.

Funny Girl ~ Not fake. Just huge. They are the perfect tears for a movie. Your eyes fill really full and then you have the first big tear and it races the whole way down your face. No puny tears for you.

Before having the babe, I was tough as nails. Only my grandmother's death and extremely emotional movies could invoke tears. Now, sometimes a news story about kids, people telling me emotionally charged stories, and even movies touch me (but not enough for the tears to flow only well up a little).

Rachel, thanks for commenting over at my blog, I appreciate it.

All sorts of things can move me to tears, from sad things in my own life to the pain of my friends to the bad things that happen to strangers to the tragic moments in a film. And yet sometimes the tears don't come when I'd expect them to. But I'm a real sap when it comes to happy tears. The little things that make me go awwwww and get me all teary.
