Hump Day Hottie

This weeks Hump Day Hottie was born on February 21, 1946 in Hammersmith, London to a working class family. His father, an Irish Catholic factory worker died when he was eight leaving his mother, a Welsh homemaker alone to raise 4 children.

He attended Chelsea College of Art and made his way as a graphic artist in Soho. He received a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) which he attended from 1972-1974 and won numerous awards while there.

Since then, he has been a constant presence on the British stage. and has appeared in productions including The Seagull, As You Like It and played the male lead in the 1985 Royal Shakespeare Company production of Les Liaisons Dangereuses. When the performance came to America, he received a Tony Award nomination.

In addition to appearing in numerous BBC television shows, he has also demonstrated considerable talent as a comedy actor is films such as Galaxy Quest, Dogma and, my personal favorite, Love Actually. He won a Golden Globe and an Emmy for his performance as Rasputin in 1996 and was also nominated for an Emmy for his work as Dr. Alfred Blalock in 2004's Something The Lord Made.

This weeks HDH has a vast and rich history of work but is best known for a role that he refuses to talk about as he feels that people are too interested in that role to pay attention to his other work and doesn't want to ruin the mystery of the character for the fans by talking about him. That most famous role would be as the mysterious potions professor Severus Snape in the Harry Potter series.

This weeks Hump Day Hottie is ~ Alan Rickman

Aww, I love Alan Rickman! He was so good in "Die Hard", I think it's the first movie I remember him in. Also loved him in "Sense and Sensibility" and of course the "Harry Potter" movies. Excellent choice!

I always thought it was funny that his Galaxy Quest character is taking the place of Mr. Spock, but apparently he is known for swearing to get revenge after someone has been killed. All very logical I'm sure, but it just didn't sound like something that a Vulcan would say.

Excellent choice. I've thought he was a really good actor since I first saw him in Truly, Madly, Deeply and think he's awesome as Snape. He's also fantastic on stage from the couple of productions I've seen.

Ok, I'm not really all that geeked up about this guy but I do think he is very talkented.

I've been a fan for 19 years now (Die Hard was when I took notice - but seeing Closet Land really took my breath away! Left me with nightmares, yes, but what a performance!)

The Search for John Gissing is an indie he was in with Janeane Garofalo and Mike Binder - it's incredibly funny -- a fantastic example of his impeccable comedic timing. It has to be ordered from the Freebird site, not Netflix-able, but so very worth it, IMO.

Griz and I absolutely LOVED him in a little known movie called THE JANUARY MAN. It had a great cast--Kevin Kline, Mary Elizabeth Mastrontonio, Susan Sarandon, and so on, but Rickman totally stole the show for us as this funny, laid back artist. We'd only seen him playing Mr. Intensity type roles before then, so he was just a scream.

The movie is considered a bomb, although we personally loved it, but it's worth seeing alone just for Rickman. He's THAT good.

Great choice, yet again.

He's an awesome Snape.

He also did an amazing job (and an unbelievably authentic Southern accent) in "A Thing the Lord Has Made", co-starring with Mos Def, (who, btw, would make another great HDH) in a movie on HBO about medicine and race and a whole lot of other important things.
